The work starts off with a vigorous rhythm, over which a trumpet call is played, which seems to incite the other instruments to join in a sonic romp. The main theme has a carefree vigor and its second subject is utterly rollicking in its stomping manner and sense of wild festivity. The middle section maintains the mood of joy and frolicsome spirit. After a return of the main materials, the trumpet call ends the music rather suddenly. Some would observe that this work's short length -- about two-and-a-half minutes -- is further evidence that the darker creative spirit of Josef inhibited him from writing happy music for too long. In any event, this joyous piece is well worth hearing, not least because its raucous manner is quite at odds with much Viennese light dance music.
