The text of Hildegard's Nunc gaudeant caps the collected works in that manuscript with a joyful note: "Let us now praise the viscera of the mother church, who brings her children in supernal symphonies together into her." She brings them despite the devices of the Serpent, and through the praiseworthy blood of the Son of God -- Alleluia! The text, almost certainly her own, sits exhuberantly in her musical setting, cast in an ascendant Aeolian mode (though tinged with severe lowered seventh steps). Hildegard's melody characteristically inhabits a very wide range, an octave and a half, and frequently arches through wide expanses of this range. At the same time, almost every phrase of text closes on a similar -- and conclusive -- cadential figure. The music reiterates both the joy, and the solid foundation, of the church body she celebrates.
